By now I’m sure you’ve heard of the heartless-senseless crime that took place at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church on yesterday evening. However, if you haven’t, here’s a short rundown.
On the evening of June 17th, members of the Emanuel AME Church along with their Pastor, Reverend Clementa Pinckney, were conducting Bible study when a 21 year old male opened fire. According to reports, eight people died at the scene and a ninth victim died at an area hospital. Authorities say that the suspect, entered the church, sat down and was there for an hour before he opened fire. They are calling the crime a hate crime.
Let me start by saying I know this is not the first shooting to occur at a place of worship. I get that and I was angry when I heard of the others. However, this one had me mad as hell. My first thoughts were:
“Anyone who would even consider committing a crime at a church, synagogue or any religious place or event, should have a special seat reserved for them in Hell. These are locations that the disheartened, spiritually weak, and emotionally broken should be able to go and hear or receive some message that will lift their spirits and give them the desire to keep pushing. These are the places where men, women and children should be able to come without worry or regret and sing and give praise to the God they serve for His goodness and mercy. Our Place of Worship should be the one place, outside of our homes that we can go and feel at peace. To walk inside a Holy place and turn it to a bloody crime scene is a cowardly and despicable act. An act that only a heartless, evil parasite could commit.”
The suspect, Dylann Roof (who is now in custody), strolled into a beautiful place of worship with the intent to take lives. He sat down with members of the congregation, as they studied and prayed; all while knowing he was there to terrorize and destroy. He was allowed in and undoubtedly welcomed without question because, he was in the midst of loving and praying individuals. He was welcomed without question because he was in the Lord’s House and His children welcome and accept all. He was welcomed and instead of using that invitation, to learn and grow-he followed through with his premeditated plan and shed the blood of the unsuspecting worshipers. I imagine those same victims would have fed, clothed and even sheltered Dylann had he been in need. Those same victims would have went down on their knees and prayed for his protection, grace and for him to be shown mercy. Those same individuals would have listened to his hate-filled rants against black people and would have attempted to teach him that when this life is over, we will all stand before a just God; Who will issue each of us punishment and rewards accordingly. Punishment/ rewards for the lives we lived and how we loved or didn’t love others. Punishment/rewards that will have nothing to do with the color of our skin. I also imagine those individuals, would have told Dylann that they forgive him. These thoughts turned my anger to tears as I begin to think about the conditions of this world. I was once again reminded that no matter how much we progress, there is still so much work to be done.
The truth of the matter is, that no matter how much some would like to brush racism under the rug, its alive and well in this lovely Land of the Free and Home of the Brave. Our failure to acknowledge it will only lead to more chaos and destruction. By being silent we are often quietly participating. We have to let those who should be living on their own planet (aka racist, bigots and sexist) know that we will not continue to travel backwards and they shall not win. However, we should choose to do so in a peaceful manner (whenever possible) and we should allow our actions and voices to speak for the many who have been silenced throughout the years, while fighting for equality, love and freedom. We should do so for the beautiful victims in Charleston. We should do so for ourselves. #LOVE
